"Thanks to my passion for collecting information and documents, I have gradually created a rather rich 'Island Archive.' Besides documents, records, old postcards and photographs, I have tried to bring to life the old wooden houses of the island—those destined for destruction, ruined, demolished, or left to decay—through my drawings. As always, I have made a special effort to support my pages with visual material.

The first part of the book covers the ancient and medieval history of the island, as well as the stories of the unfortunate princes and princesses confined in the island's monasteries during the thousand-plus years of the Byzantine era, the exiled palace aristocracy who suffered the wrath of emperors, and the numerous clergymen isolated in monasteries. The events of the centuries after the conquest, the island and island life, and the writings of travelers, politicians, religious figures, and scientists who visited Istanbul for various reasons are brought to life.

The second part covers the appearance of Kariye-i Rumiyan, or Prinkipo, especially in recent centuries." It encompasses the neighborhoods and districts, streets and squares, the market, the island houses, religious buildings, the native islanders and summer residents, and island life in general. In a way, it is the story of the "established island culture," which has recently been almost forgotten, and the period of the island during the Greek era, a question that is frequently asked. I have tried to recreate it faithfully to the truth.

"The third and final section of the book covers the island's historical monasteries and the surrounding areas and neighborhoods: the Metamorphosis Monastery and the Hristos Quarter, which developed in the 19th century; the Monastery of St. Nicholas in the Ancient Kariye or Sunken Church area; and the Monastery of St. George Kudunas, a monumental structure on the island whose historical buildings have been victims of unconscious restoration in recent years…"
