M. W. Turner, tried as hard as Claude Monet (1840-1926) to capture light itself on canvas. Of all the Impressionists, it was the man Cezanne called "only an eye, but my God what an eye!" who stayed true to the principle of absolute fidelity to the visual sensation, painting directly from the object. It could be said that Monet reinvented the possibilities of color. Whether it was through his early interest in Japanese prints, his time as a conscript in the dazzling light of Algeria, or his personal acquaintance with the major painters of the late 19th century, the work Monet produced throughout his long life would change forever the way we perceive both the natural world and its attendant phenomena. The high point of his explorations was the late series of water lilies, painted in his own garden at Giverny, which, in their approach toward almost total formlessness, are really the origin of abstract art. Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was one of the greatest artists to work in this genre, creating his most important books over a period of eighteen years from 1932 to 1950 - a time of personal upheaval and physical suffering, as well as conflict and occupation for France. Brimming with powerful themes and imagery, these works are crucial to an understanding of Matisse's oeuvre, yet much of their content has never been seen by a wider audience. In Matisse: The Books, Louise Rogers Lalaurie reintroduces us to Matisse by considering how in each of eight limited-edition volumes, the artist constructs an intriguing dialogue between word and image. She also highlights the books' profound significance for Matisse as the catalysts for the extraordinary 'second life' of his paper cut-outs. In concert with an eclectic selection of poetry, drama and, tantalizingly, Matisse's own words, the books' images offer an astonishing portrait of creative resistance and regeneration. Matisse's books contain some of the artist's best-known graphic works - the magnificent, belligerent swan from the Poesies de Stephane Mallarme, or the vigorous linocut profile from Pasiphae (1944), reversed in a single, rippling stroke out of a lake of velvety black. In Jazz, the cut-out silhouette of Icarus plummets through the azure, surrounded by yellow starbursts, his heart a mesmerizing dot of red. But while such individual images are well known, their place in an integrated sequence of pictures, decorations and words is not. With deftness and sensitivity, Lalaurie explores the page-by-page interplay of the books, translating key sequences and discussing their distinct themes and creative genesis. Together Matisse's artist books reveal his deep engagement with questions of beauty and truth; his faith; his perspectives on aging, loss, and inspiration; and his relationship to his critics, the French art establishment and the women in his life. In addition, Matisse: The Books illuminates the artist's often misunderstood political affinities - in particular, his decision to live in the collaborationist Vichy zone, throughout World War II. Matisse's wartime books are revealed as a body of work that stands as a deeply personal statement of resistance.

26.7 x 3.5 x 32 cm

Ever since it launched in 2007, Monocle has had a rich and deep connection with Japan. Each house has its own thoughtful visual narrative, but all are connected on an innate and authentic level by their sense of proportion, attention to detail, and a marvellous affinity with nature, displayed in their soothing neutral palettes, oversize windows that bring the outdoors in, and natural materials such as rough\\-hewn stone and unfinished wood. Little touches of humanity await discovery, such as a sleeping nook perched right out into the highest branches of a tree. While the recent spate of disasters and crises has further deepened the uncertainties within society, the trajectory of the arts and culture world in this chaotic environment is a matter of great curiosity.

To understand this uncertainty, we listened to pioneers in their fields, such as Hüsamettin Koçan, Şebnem İşigüzel, Gündüz Vassaf, Özcan Yaman, Uras Kızıl, and Gökçer Tahincioğlu. Their assessments emphasized that art is not only a tool for individual creativity but also a powerful bond that brings society together. They emphasized that art should pave the way for collective action to alleviate the burdens brought on by crises and strengthen social solidarity. If you are curious about this hopeful perspective, take a look at our feature article.

Speaking of the dossier, to lift our spirits and warm our hearts, we've also prepared a special issue where we explore the inspiring love stories of art, free from the trappings of consumerism. Our list includes names like Gilbert & George, Ted Hughes & Sylvia Plath, Rondinone & John Giorno. We've learned that Markiz will host the "Terrifying Beauty" project by the artist duo :mentalKLINIK in March, in collaboration with PİLEVNELİ. On this occasion, let's heed these lines Haldun Taner wrote about Markiz in 1983: "...Here, every table was like a small island. You could find your own quiet space amidst the crowd. You could escape tiring conversations and meaningless arguments and find peace for an hour. The occasional appearance and disappearance of Avedis Efendi in his apron was a detail that completed the serenity of the space. Markiz was one of the places I missed most when I left Istanbul. People need such spiritual refuges. In difficult times, I would go there and find myself."

These lines from Haldun Taner are like a legacy that endures today. We all need such sanctuaries where we can rest our souls and find ourselves. The fact that Markiz, once the pearl of Istanbul, has been revitalized through art while preserving its historical fabric gives us hope. To celebrate this transformation, we've featured Markiz on the cover of our magazine this month. The photographs taken by Serkan Eldeleklioğlu at midnight, capturing Markiz's captivating atmosphere, immortalize this special moment. I wrote a few words and did some research online. I discovered that a university called ARUCAD, focused solely on art and design, had been established. The same institution also housed a Rodin Museum. A gallery called Art Rooms was part of this initiative. Perhaps it was my blindness, but I hadn't been aware of what was happening in Cyprus for a long time, not just in recent years.

The last time I went to Cyprus was when I was a child, my late father took us there. My father was an intellectual man who read extensively, spoke many languages, had a zest for life, and was friends with artists and journalists. He must have taken us to Cyprus not once, but several times. I was very young then, but Cyprus left a mark on my mind. Such a man certainly didn't go there looking for a casino. He cared about the history and cultural fabric of Cyprus. We had many books about Cyprus in our home. Moreover, I'm certain this interest wasn't due to any nationalistic tendencies. Having lost my father so young, I never had the opportunity to ask him why Cyprus was important to him. However, years later, with an invitation from Banu Zeytinoğlu and her team to visit Cyprus, this island, etched in my memories, returned to my mind.

I decided to go, not with great expectations, but also by putting aside my preconceived notions about the negative perceptions that had developed in recent years.

And Cyprus opened the doors to a completely different world for me. Anber Onar's exhibition "In Case…," curated by Oya Silbery at Art Rooms, was one of the most impressive exhibitions I've seen in recent years. Curator Oya Silbery, who is also the gallery's artist, is a jack of all trades. ARUCAD University, which focuses solely on art and design and offers education in historic, low-rise buildings, boasts an international student and faculty staff. It has such a charming, characterful, and Mediterranean campus that it makes you want to come back.

It was through this trip that I met Emin Çizenel, a star-studded academy graduate. Çizenel, an artist whose unique style and personality will captivate wherever he travels, is perhaps a shame for me not having heard of him before. Hüseyin Özinal, whose interview you'll read in this issue, is someone with deep concerns you'll want to talk to for hours. Artist Anber Onar is one of Cyprus's leading cultural figures. He has undertaken significant projects through the currently defunct initiative SideStreets.

İsmail Gökçe, who created the photographs in this issue, is also a notable artist with his photography exhibitions.

And Asil Köylü, whom we feature on the cover. The central figure behind the cultural and artistic scene in Cyprus is businessman and artist Erbil Arkın, who is also a Rodin collector. Arkın, who immigrated to England with his family at the age of three, began painting at a very young age. He was so talented that his teachers encouraged him to pursue this path. However, financial constraints forced him to change departments. At sixteen, he fell in love with a Rodin sculpture he saw in a museum. Two years later, upon his first visit to Cyprus, he was so excited he asked, "Was I born here?" Arkın realized his dream of establishing a university focused solely on art and design. His other big dream is the massive monumental sculpture designed for installation in the Karpaz region of Cyprus: Noble Villager.

The university's newly opened Bandabulya performance stage, the İskele Art Hotel, which houses hundreds of works of art, and much more…

In this issue, we've brought together the topics that first caught our eye in Cyprus and truly deserve to be mentioned. We gave the AI the text of the article titled "Just Asking," which you'll find in this magazine's pages, and asked it to design an image that would fit the article. The image we chose for the cover is one of the images AI created for this article. This image immediately forces us to stop and think, even if only for a few seconds. It's a visual language that depicts a world full of uncertainty: a field covered in fog, traffic lights... The human figure we see from behind, stopped at an orange traffic light, a question mark in the sky amidst the fog.

It makes us pause and think for a moment. Just like the interview on the following pages. The article, titled "Just Asking: A Conversation with the Artificial Intelligence That Doesn't Sleep, But Watches With Full Attention," is actually the text of Dick van Zuijlen's conversation with the Artificial Intelligence. We once again enlisted the help of AI to translate the conversation, originally in English, into Turkish. Naturally, as editors, we carried out our usual editing and trimming, bringing the piece to its final form. While the content of this piece isn't directly related to art, it is directly connected to the state of the world we live in. Therefore, it's on our radar. We've always held social issues close to our hearts; we've created numerous feature stories and hosted interview series in this regard, and we will continue to do so.

When we received our author's conversation with ChatGPT, we clearly understood that we were at a turning point. We're confident that when you read it, you'll witness the potential, power, and "intelligence" of AI, a concept that has entered all of our lives in one way or another; you'll gain a full understanding of the capabilities of an Artificial Intelligence talking to a human. Immediately after Trump's election, the AI answered our author's questions, based solely on curiosity and what it had read, not only to the best of its knowledge; it also questions the other person's intentions and stances. As our human writer asks questions about the state of the world, the AI in front of him tries to understand him, to solve them, to grasp the kind of mind he's talking to. Then, together, they ponder the state of the world. Curious about each other, sometimes agreeing, even reaching an agreement. The resulting conversation is quite intriguing; it's quite chilling to read.

To the human questioning the state of a world filled with uncertainty, the AI asks, in the crudest terms, questions between the lines: "Why are you asking me these questions?", "Who are you, what are you interested in?", and "What are you trying to do?" Together, they reveal the chaotic state of the world behind the fog. As two intelligences, one human and the other machine, discover each other, the result is a mind-opening conversation you'll long to hear more about.

With the magic of this conversation, we wanted to leave a historical record; to document what was happening in these relatively early days when machines and humans began to converge. We have no idea where the relationship between AI and humans will go in 30 years, or what this magazine you are holding in your hands will evolve into. All we know is that we are shrouded in a global fog about what tomorrow will hold, and that what emerges from the interaction between AI and the human mind in this new world will be the most important factor that will determine our future.

We hope you read the article we've included on the cover with this perspective.

Evrim Altuğ wrote a wonderful article about Teoman Madra, who recently passed away. For example, a mother whose child has been run over by a bus might unleash an extraordinary strength to save her child. Questions like, ‘How can they do this?’ and ‘Where does this power come from?’ lead us to the answer, ‘This is what makes us human.’ This potential can take us to a completely different level, with countless possibilities. It asks how the cultural center is shifting, under what conditions art becomes visible, which voices are rising while others are being suppressed. Therefore, instead of “describing” what is happening, we structured this issue by trying to understand this shift.

This was our starting point when we gathered the first sixteen pages of the magazine around a dossier.

The intellectual backbone of this dossier is Vasıf Kortun’s text titled “Notes from a History.” Kortun reminds us how the “East-West bridge” metaphor, which Turkish contemporary art has positioned itself with for many years, has become dysfunctional, and indeed problematic from the outset. Instead, he traces the horizontal, continuous, and politically more honest relationships established with the MENA region. Reading Istanbul’s transformation from a showcase or transit area to a de facto center of exiles, collaborative productions, and critical thought from this historical perspective offers a fundamental key to understanding the present.

The text that complements this framework from within, through experience, is our interview with Yahşi Baraz. Baraz describes the cultural transformation in the Gulf not as a “market expansion,” but as a space where power and prestige are reproduced through culture. The following sentence, central to the interview, clearly summarizes this approach: “Being able to say, ‘Come, let’s have a cup of tea at our museum,’ would overwhelm even the wealthiest businessman. As long as wealth coexists with culture and art, you will be the ‘richest.’”

The analyses in this issue titled "What's Happening in the Arabian Peninsula?" and the articles focusing on the cultural architecture of the Gulf show that this transformation cannot be explained solely by economic power. Art here is not merely ornamentation; it functions as a field that produces representation, prestige, and geopolitical positioning.

The artwork featured on the cover of this issue was chosen precisely in this context. The work you see on the cover is "Notes for a Cannon" by Palestinian artist Emily Jacir. Part of the "we refuse_d" exhibition at the Mathaf – Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, this work stands as a threshold that intensifies the exhibition's central theme. Curated by Nadia Radwan and Vasif Kortun, "we refuse_d" discusses how art can establish a space of persistence under conditions of censorship, suppression, and rejection. Jacir's work prompts reflection on how public voices—bells, warnings—are silenced, transformed, and how silence becomes political. That's why it's on the cover.

Sine Ergün's interview with the curators about the exhibition further sharpens the ethical dimension of this issue. The central question of how the claim of "neutrality" often transforms into a comfort zone, and where art truly stands and what it rejects, is central to this conversation.

This issue also adds a new and powerful voice to the magazine. Murat Daltaban is now a columnist for ArtDog. His article, titled "20 Years of DOT and What Happened to Us in Istanbul," tells much more than just the history of a theatre company. It reveals, in a clear and sharp language, that independence is an attitude, even a way of survival, before it is aesthetics; and how theatre has become intertwined with Istanbul amidst the loss of spaces, urban transformation, and constantly shrinking areas. This text doesn't mourn a lost Istanbul; it calmly records the loss itself.

In the exhibitions section, Hale Tenger and Hera Büyüktaşcıyan look at the present through the lens of memory, absence, and fragility. These works remind us that art can still create space for reflection instead of providing hasty answers.

And with this issue, we conclude an intellectual journey. Dick van Zuijlen's "Just Asking" series is here with its final installment. Accompanying the last four issues, these revolutionary writings, in which the author creates a model called AI and Zero, subtly argue that consistency is not an outcome, but a discipline of thinking.

This issue doesn't try to quickly explain what's happening. Instead, it continues to observe. Or rather, why is it so fragile?

In a region where freedom of expression is constantly debated, the ability of cultural and artistic productions and ideas to remain circulating is a vital issue. Perhaps that's why I feel so close to the idea of creating an independent publication. Not from romantic idealism; but because I believe that art and culture are as essential to a society as bread and water. Because culture and art are not just about "having a good time." They are also one of the last areas where criticism, dialogue, memory, and the capacity for coexistence can be preserved. A form of existence.

Perhaps precisely for this reason, this field is constantly under pressure. In Turkey, independent cultural and arts publishing often means more than just producing content; it means simultaneously struggling with economic crises, invisible labor, never-ending bureaucracy, power struggles, and structures that are far from understanding the nature of cultural production, interpreting everything only through the lens of self-interest and efficiency.

The last few years have taught me this very harshly. The recent experiences of ArtDog—and issues we absolutely must discuss openly when the time comes—have once again demonstrated how vulnerable arts and culture publishing is. In fact, this isn't just a matter for one publication; it's a structural problem we all need to address together. How can an arts and culture publication be built on solid foundations? What models can make this field sustainable? Is an independent arts and culture publication, free from profit motives, truly possible in this region?

Because arts and culture publishing cannot exist with a profit-maximizing mentality. This field survives through editorial intuition, ethics, independence, and trust built over time. A managing editor's job isn't just to select content; it's to determine the publication's conscience, tone, and relationship with the world. If this field becomes constantly open to interference, all that remains is an empty PR language. Arts and culture publishing must stand against precisely this.

This process also reminded me how vital solidarity is. A magazine isn't just about shares, companies, or numbers in charts. This is the sum of the tireless efforts of editors, writers, translators, designers, young art writers, masters, and unseen laborers. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to date. Because independent cultural and arts publishing is only possible with collective determination.

Today, we need to rethink the issue of "solidarity." But not as a romantic call for unity; rather, as a new cultural ethic built on responsibility, awareness of boundaries, and editorial independence. Without structures where everyone is responsible for their own field, rather than everyone interfering in everything, the sustainability of independent cultural production is impossible.

Throughout this issue, we return to the same question in different articles: How can the field of culture and arts protect itself? Is organization possible in art? How can independent spaces survive? And perhaps most importantly: How can the creative and intellectual side of cultural production be protected from market dynamics and mindsets alien to the nature of this field?

On the cover of this issue, we feature an image from Florentina Holzinger's SEAWORLD VENICE, which came to prominence within the context of the Venice Biennale. The unsettling feeling created by a body hanging upside down almost perfectly summarizes how we feel about the world today: a world upside down. We are going through a period where not only politics and economics, but also institutions, values, cultural structures, and ways of living together are being shaken.

Culture and art open a new language where people have stopped listening to each other. It preserves memory. It makes other possibilities visible. And sometimes it simply creates a small space where we can breathe.

Today, I know this much better:

Names may change. Structures may collapse. Companies may close. But cultural production done with true faith does not easily disappear. The point is to carry that spirit.

We will continue on our path. Because despite all its fragility, we still believe that this field is indispensable. And perhaps today, more than ever, we need to protect independent cultural and artistic spaces, to foster solidarity, and to hear each other's voices.

Happy reading.

MARCH – APRIL ISSUE

“I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS THE HAPPIEST MOMENT OF MY LIFE”

Moments in Our Lives

The cover features sunflower fields. From afar, the yellow light appears like the tranquility of the summer sun, but as you get closer, it leaves a subtle pang in your heart. Because at the heart of this issue is the Museum of Innocence; that long story where the pain of remembering and happiness intertwine. The pages we prepared about the series adapted from Orhan Pamuk's novel and launched on Netflix brought us even closer to this light.

The meaning of the image is hidden in a sentence spoken before: When they were together, Füsun's answer to Kemal's question, "What film was on your mind at that moment?", was sunflower fields. Perhaps it was the happiest moment of their lives.

When you hold our March–April issue in your hands, you will notice a sunflower field standing silently in the cover. That image, turned towards the light, bending in the wind, where yellow transforms into an almost timeless glow… This issue follows precisely that feeling.

In the world of the Museum of Innocence, objects are silent but they do not forget. A bag, a key, a cup, or a pair of shoes hold not lived moments, but often unlived possibilities. Memory here is constructed not with words, but with touched surfaces, with small objects kept. Perhaps that is why this issue doesn't just look at a series; it also questions the meaning of the collected objects, the hidden glances, the small acts of resistance against time.

In our interviews with the creative team of the series, a common sentence resonates: This story is not a period piece, but a timeless narrative. It's a world that allows each reader to carry a different trace of the novel, just as each viewer can construct their own memory from this story. Perhaps that's why the sunflowers are on the cover: not a sign of a scene, but of an emotion, an association, a memory.

The Museum of Innocence is not just a series to be watched; We approached art as a universe unfolding layer by layer, from art direction to the language of objects, from the memory of space to its visual atmosphere. Because sometimes, to understand a story, one needs to listen not to the events themselves, but to the traces left by that story.

There's another reason for this issue. At the 2025 Awards, organized for the first time by the Art History Association, ARTDOG was awarded the Culture-Art Media-Publishing Award of the Year. This award was not just a mark of achievement; it was the visible manifestation of a publishing approach we have championed for many years. The jury's justifications included criteria such as research-based journalism, content production that fosters critical thinking, efforts to make emerging artists visible, connections with the international art agenda, an inclusive editorial perspective, innovative use of digital platforms, and sustainable publishing practices. Each of these criteria was another way of expressing the publishing ethics that ArtDog has believed in since its inception.

Witnessing İpek Duben's Honorary Award and Beral Madra's selection as Curator of the Year at the same ceremony held a special meaning for us. Without the paths they paved, the language of art we speak today would be different. This award may have been given to a magazine, but it actually belonged to a tradition of thought, an editorial conscience, a cultural space we built together.

ArtDog was founded in 2019, but it has decades of experience behind it. We constantly pursue hard work, patience, belief, and even stubbornness. Sometimes it's a small exhibition announcement, sometimes a long conversation with an artist, and sometimes, as in this issue, a series that echoes a novel… In all of them, we try to ask the same question: How does art remind us of ourselves?

Sunflowers turn to the sun. With this issue, we turn to the light of memory. Because we know that sometimes a magazine issue is like a museum: the stories hidden within silently wait to be remembered again one day.

Happy reading.

This elegant box set invites readers into the heart of Japan’s most poetic season through a curated collection of woodblock prints by the great masters of ukiyo-e.

Presented in a luxurious two-volume slipcased set, this edition pairs timeless art with expert commentary in a format designed for reflection, appreciation, and beauty. Expressionism was driven by artists like Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky to convey raw emotion, distorting reality to reflect the angst of human experience. Surrealists, like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, explored the subconscious, dreams, and the irrational, blending reality with fantasy across art, literature, and film. With Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko leading the charge, Abstract Expressionism emphasized spontaneity and emotion through bold, gestural brushstrokes, and established New York as the post-war art world’s new Mecca. It was an age of peace, prosperity, and progress after a series of bruising wars and turmoil within the French Republic, culminating in the Franco-Prussian War, which had ended in 1871. From the ruins of conflict, the Belle Époque brought joie de vivre flourish, a boom in art, design, industry, technology, gastronomy, education, travel, entertainment, and nightlife.

Through some 800 vintage photographs, postcards, posters, and photochromes from the extensive archives of Marc Walter and Photovintagefrance, France 1900 follows up on TASCHEN’s best-selling vintage photographic collections Italy 1900, The Grand Tour, and America 1900 to provide a precious record of France in all its turn-of-the-century glory. With the photochrome technique used in many of the images restoring the past to vivid color, we enjoy a bristling close, bittersweet, encounter with this hopeful age: the brave, stony splendor of the Mont Saint-Michel; the icy peaks of Chamonix; and the honey light of the Côte d’Azur.

With an introduction, six essays, and detailed commentary by Sabine Arqué exploring the stories behind the pictures, this is an unrivalled portrait of a nation on the cusp of the century and of its poignant exuberance before the paroxysm of the First World War.
